Abstract The Implicit Association Test (IAT) is supposed to measure associations between concepts by way of classifying associated stimuli under time pressure. One model explaining the resulting reaction-time differences (“IAT effect”) focuses on these stimuli. We argue that it is not compatible with all existing findings. However, we also find wanting a model that focuses on the superordinate concepts. Therefore, we introduce a two-factor model. The associations of the superordinate concepts determine the cognitive representation of the task, whereas the associations of the stimuli influence how fast they are classified. The results of several experiments show the influence of the selected stimuli and concept names. Other experiments corroborate that the IAT effect also appears if the concepts themselves are used as stimuli. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2005 APA, all rights reserved) (journal abstract)

Title Die Bedeutung sensorischer Verarbeitung und Aufmerksamkeitssteuerung für Arbeits-gedächtnisfunktionenSensory memory and attentional control as a pre-requisite for working memory processes Type Journal Article

Abstract Typically, working memory models stress the function of maintaining information in the service of higher cognitive functions. We discuss another aspect of working memory: In accordance with models suggesting a close interaction of working memory and the attentional system (i.e. Cowan, 1999) we investigate the interaction of involuntary attention and central executive processes as a prerequisite for both information maintenance and flexible reaction on unexpected changes in the environment. The present review shows the importance of controlling the effects of pre-attentive sensory processing and the voluntary re-orienting to task-relevant information. It leads to an integrative working memory model including information storage, attention, and sensory processing. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2005 APA, all rights reserved) (journal abstract)
